Abstract This document identifies the components and details the usage of the HP ProLiant SL390s G7 4U Half-width Server. This document is intended for the person who installs, administers, and troubleshoots servers and storage systems. This person should be qualified in the servicing of computer equipment and trained in recognizing hazards in products with hazardous energy levels.

System fans The server has eight system fans located on the rear panel of the chassis. The following figure identifies the system fans by device number. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the server, do not install a combination of redundant and non-redundant fans.

Rack planning resources The rack resource kit ships with all HP branded or Compaq branded 9000, 10000, and H9 series racks. For more information on the content of each resource, see the rack resource kit documentation.
HP servers draw in cool air through the front door and expel warm air through the rear door. Therefore, the front and rear rack doors must be adequately ventilated to allow ambient room air to enter the cabinet, and the rear door must be adequately ventilated to allow the warm air to escape from the cabinet.
Because of the high ground-leakage currents associated with multiple servers connected to the same power source, HP recommends the use of a PDU that is either permanently wired to the building’s branch circuit or includes a nondetachable cord that is wired to an industrial-style plug. NEMA locking-style plugs or those complying with IEC 60309 are considered suitable for this purpose.

Press the F9 key when prompted during the boot process to change the server settings using RBSU. The system is set up by default for the English language. For more information on the automatic configuration, refer to the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility User Guide located on the Documentation CD.
Hardware options installation Introduction If more than one option is being installed, read the installation instructions for all the hardware options and identify similar steps to streamline the installation process. Open the processor locking lever and the processor socket retaining bracket. Do not remove the processor socket cover. IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool. If the processor has separated from the installation tool, carefully re-insert the processor in the tool. Handle the processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.

Press the tabs on the processor installation tool to separate it from the processor, and then remove the tool. Close the processor socket retaining bracket and the processor locking lever. Remove the heatsink protective cover. CAUTION: Heatsink screws should be tightened and loosened in alternating sequence. Do not overtighten the screws as this can damage the system board, connectors, or screws. When using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to 0.68 to 0.90 Nm (6 to 8 in-lb.) of torque. ASR is a feature that causes the system to restart when a catastrophic operating system error occurs, such as a blue screen, ABEND (does not apply to HP ProLiant DL980 Servers), or panic. A system fail-safe timer, the ASR timer, starts when the System Management driver, also known as the Health Driver, is loaded. When the operating system is functioning properly, the system periodically resets the timer.

USB support and functionality USB support HP provides both standard USB 2.0 support and legacy USB 2.0 support. Standard support is provided by the OS through the appropriate USB device drivers. Before the OS loads, HP provides support for USB devices through legacy USB support, which is enabled by default in the system ROM.
Diagnostic tools HP Insight Diagnostics HP Insight Diagnostics is a proactive server management tool, available in both offline and online versions, that provides diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities to assist IT administrators who verify server installations, troubleshoot problems, and perform repair validation.
